Want to Volunteer? Would you like to be able to give back to your community? Would you like to be able to make a difference to a very wonderful and historical landmark, that sits at the doorstep of our fair city? There are a lot of happenings going on at the Arsenal St. cemetery. There is plenty to do there and there are many different aspects to volunteering as well. Well, I have just the place for you. It is known as the Arsenal St. Cemetery...... the 700 block of Watertown, N.Y. 13601. First and foremost, volunteers that are needed right now are the ones that are able- bodied and have a lot of energy. Adults and kids alike are needed for raking, cleaning out gardens, planting, moving dirt at times, cutting back overgrown brush / lilacs and hauling it to the side roads. There is also a need for painters to finish up the gazebo that was put up last Fall. Paint and brushes will be supplied. Also, there are 2 piles of dirt that needed to be shoveled over to the gazebo, for the new red rose gardens that are going in around it. This dirt was dug up when the base was placed for the gazebo. We have 2 bird feeder complexes there that will hold several birdfeeders, and we need volunteers to come and fill them up weekly or bi-weekly. There can be several folks that can share this responsibility. There is also the documentation of the written script/names/and dates from the headstones. Of course there are some tricks to the trade that will hep one obtain them from the not- so- easy to read headstones. There is photographing of the headstones which will entail before and after shots of the headstones when they are cleaned and straightened/or re-set. The documentation of these are vital to the map that will be created for visitors in the future. I know I will be adding more as I go along.....but please, if you have the heart of a servant, and would like to help out.... please contact me, Kathy Plante-Hunt at 788-3306.
