Arsenal Street Cemeter - Adopt - A - Plot
Adopt - A - Plot

Our cleanups have succeeded in cutting down most of the brush and small trees in the cemetery. We are asking those individuals that are interested in making Arsenal St. Cemetery beautiful again to adopt a plot (or two) as their own for seasonal maintenance.

Many of the plots at the cemetery contain graves of families that are no longer able to do the physical work of weeding, trimming, raking, bagging, and planting. And some families have moved away from the Watertown area or have died out entirely so their sites need to have someone to look after them.

Adopting a Plot means that you make a commitment to clean up a cemetery plot by removing debris (including weeds, trash, old brush, etc.) and to keep it clean by checking the site every month or so during the growing season.

Also, It is recommended that perennials and bulbs be planted so that there can be continuous color throughout the season. Some of the plot sites are in relatively good condition and will take only a minimum of work to keep them that way. Other plots have become totally overgrown by lilacs, honeysuckle, weeds and would require a person in good physical condition to reclaim the site.

If you are a person who has an interest in history and /or just want to make a contribution of your time and talent to cleaning up this small part of the North Country community, please contact Kathy Plante-Hunt at (315) 788-3306 and she will help you select a plot that will be a fit for you and your interests.

If you want to help in this community effort but don’t have the time or physical ability to do the work, you can contribute a tax-deductible donation to the Watertown Comptroller’s office. You can also donate via PayPal (no account required) using the link at the left. The money will be used to buy mulch, topsoil, solar lights, plants, trees and other landscape products that are needed to beautify the cemetery. Also, items for repairing broken headstones, re-setting, restoring the headstones and making them safer will be purchased. Instructions for donating are in the Donate section of this website. A not-for-profit status is being sought at this time and we will keep everyone posted as it progresses.

You may contact Kathy Plante-Hunt at (315) 788-3306 for more information.
